Chennai Metro Rail Headquarters Awarded IGBC Platinum Certification

Chennai, October 2025: Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has been awarded the prestigious Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Platinum Certification under the IGBC Green New Buildings Rating System for its state-of-the-art headquarters at Nandanam.

The recognition underscores CMRL’s steadfast commitment to sustainability, with the facility excelling in key areas such as energy efficiency, water conservation, renewable energy integration, site preservation, and occupant well-being.

The Platinum Plaque and Certificate were formally presented to Thiru M.A. Siddique, I.A.S., Managing Director, CMRL, along with Thiru T. Archunan, IRSE, Director (Projects) and Tmt. Rekha Prakash, Chief General Manager (Planning & Design) by Padma Shri Ar. C.N. Raghavendran, Managing Director of C.R. Narayana Rao (CRN), in the presence of Mahesh Anand, Chairman, IGBC Chennai Chapter; Mr. Sriram Iyer, Co-Chairman, IGBC Chennai Chapter; and senior officials from CMRL and the IGBC Secretariat.

Sustainable Design Highlights

The CMRL headquarters demonstrates exemplary sustainable design features:

  • 69 trees preserved and 79% of the site landscaped with native vegetation.

  • 31% reduction in potable water use through efficient plumbing fixtures.

  • 100% wastewater treatment and reuse, covering 94% of flushing and irrigation needs.

  • 23.39% energy savings beyond ASHRAE baseline standards.

  • Rooftop solar photovoltaic system contributing 3% of annual energy demand.

  • Comprehensive energy metering and Building Management Systems (BMS) for real-time monitoring.

Beyond environmental impact, the building prioritizes employee health and comfort, featuring wellness amenities such as a yoga area and indoor recreation facilities for games like carrom, chess, and table tennis. Advanced CO₂ sensors maintain optimal indoor air quality and ventilation.

Leadership Speaks

Receiving the certification, Thiru M.A. Siddique stated,

“Sustainability is at the core of our mission. This recognition strengthens our resolve to integrate sustainable construction and operations in all our projects. We are proud to lead by example and contribute to Chennai’s vision of becoming a greener city.”

Padma Shri Ar. C.N. Raghavendran, Managing Director, CRN, praised the initiative, saying,

“This project exemplifies the shift towards high-performance, environment-sensitive buildings. CMRL’s leadership in adopting green building technologies sets a model for sustainable urban growth.”

Mahesh Anand, Chairman, IGBC Chennai Chapter, added,

“The Platinum certification is a testament to the Government of Tamil Nadu and CMRL’s vision for sustainable development. This milestone will inspire more public sector and infrastructure projects to adopt green building practices across India.”

With this achievement, CMRL’s Nandanam headquarters joins the elite list of IGBC Platinum-rated green buildings, reinforcing Chennai’s position as a leader in sustainable infrastructure and eco-conscious urban development.
