Previously available only to paid subscribers since its launch in September, the Lens now allows anyone to use AI to creatively modify their Snaps using text prompts.
Create Anything With Just a Prompt
With Imagine Lens, users can type in prompts like “Turn me into an alien” or “Show me as a pirate” after taking a selfie. You can also generate fun images such as a “grumpy cat” or visualize new Halloween costume ideas.
The AI tool offers a playful way to experiment — you can reimagine yourself or friends with new looks, share results with friends, or post them directly to your Snapchat Story.
Competing in the AI Creative Space
Snapchat’s move comes as rivals like Meta (with Meta AI) and OpenAI (with Sora) introduce advanced AI video tools that let users generate hyper-realistic content.
For example, OpenAI’s Sora allows users to create AI-generated videos of themselves after submitting a short video and audio clip. Friends can even feature each other in shared “AI cameo” clips.
By comparison, Snapchat’s free image-generation Lens helps the app stay competitive and engaging, especially among younger audiences.
Free Access and Global Rollout
Previously limited to Lens+ and Snapchat Platinum subscribers, the Imagine Lens is now available for free with a limited number of image generations per user.
At launch, free access is available to users in the U.S., with expansions planned for Canada, Great Britain, and Australia soon.
How to Try the Imagine Lens
The AI Lens can be found at the front of Snapchat’s Lens Carousel, or users can search for it by name.
To start creating:
-
Open the Lens and snap a photo.
-
Tap the caption field to enter your custom prompt.
-
Or, use one of Snapchat’s preloaded suggestions for inspiration.
A Daily Habit for Millions
According to Snap, users engage with Lenses more than 8 billion times per day — a number that’s likely to grow with the addition of the Imagine Lens, now free for everyone to explore.
